The dances, in any order

Each dance has its own path, so you can start with the rumba and come to the waltz later. Your teacher tells you when a dance is ready for the next.

  1. 01

    Waltz

    Teens and adults
    Skills
    • A closed hold and a steady frame

    • The box step, then the turning box

    • Rise and fall without bouncing

    • Taking turns to lead and follow with a rotating partner

    Moving up

When your frame holds without you thinking about it, your teacher will suggest the foxtrot. Nobody is moved on by a test.

  2. 02

    Foxtrot

    Teens and adults
    Skills
    • Slow and quick steps in rhythm

    • Walking in line of dance around the floor

    • The feather step and the three step

    • Sharing a crowded floor with other couples

    Moving up

When you can keep the rhythm while steering around the room, try the tango.

  3. 03

    Tango

    Teens and adults
    Skills
    • The tango walk in a close hold

    • Starts and stops on the beat

    • The promenade and the rock turn

    • Listening for the music's phrases

    Moving up

When the walk feels quiet and certain, you can move to the rumba.

  4. 04

    Rumba and cha-cha

    Teens and adults
    Skills
    • Slow and quick-quick timing, then the cha-cha chasse

    • Underarm turns in an open hold

    • Spot turns and a shared turn

    • Dancing both at a social night

    Moving up

After these, dancers choose what comes next. Ask a teacher about swing, salsa or bachata.

Sample levels.

The children's group learns the first steps of the waltz, foxtrot and cha-cha.
